who knew saving the environment would be so sticky

First let me say that I hold AT&T personally responsible for the last 36 hours of internetless hell I have been living in. They have directly caused me to finish a book, clean my kitchen, finish every stitch of laundry in the house, go to bed at a decent hour and watch TV. DSL my arse.

That said.

Let me tell you a little something about cloth diapering. Oh sure it is all honorable to go about disposing of my child's waste in an environmentally friendly way. Poop does not bother me, no way no how. I laugh in the face of laundry...(at least while my internet is down)...I have front a loading washer and dryer afterall.

Note: If you have the means...go buy them right now. I'll wait.

I have been using cloth on and off for about a month but today was my first full cloth day.

...and let me tell you...I under estimated the amount of stuff baby poop can actually get on.

Severely under estimated.

  • One baby
  • Three pairs of pants
  • Two onezies (that last one was missed by the smallest margin)
  • Two pairs of socks
  • One Robeez (if there is only one of them is it a Robee?)
  • The changing pad
  • The changing pad cover
  • The other changing pad cover
  • All three of the emergency changing pad cover protectors
  • The changing table
  • The wipe box
  • The basket the wipe box is in
  • The anti-bacterial hand gel
  • A Pampers Swaddler-the non-waste of which was ironically behind this whole lets go cloth thing
  • Yep, you guessed it...the wall
  • Oh yeah...lets not forget. ME

I am in no way giving up. If anything this has strengthened my resolve to do the right thing by the earth and my baby's bottom...besides there are 3 disposable diapers left in the house so it's not like I have left myself a choice here.

Now...if you'll excuse me. I have about 2 hours worth of laundry and cleaning to do....and when I am done with that 355 feeds (again a big shout out to AT&T) to sort through.

...going to be a long night.

hmmm 36 hours and that the best I could do huh...

oh my gosh girl, what kind of dipes are you USING??? Better yet.. what kind of COVERS? I suggest switching asap. If you're still getting the breastfed "blowouts" then I would suggest a nice gussetted cover. DEFINITELY get the gusset covers. At least until the poop situation ummm hardens up. :D They saved my laundry life twenty fold!!!

Kudos for using cloth diapers to save the environment, but oh my heavens, the poop. I am not a fan of poop. I think after the second changing pad you would have lost me. That is when I would be making the hysterical phone call to my husband insisting he come home and take care of his mess. Because of course it would be his fault.

I'm so proud of you for doing the cloth thing. Me? I'm just too lazy. I like to think that my taking the bus for almost ten years makes up for the environmental massacre that is me using disposables.

And yes, I'm aware I'm totally delusional.

Well, I scolded my hubby on behalf of you and your internetless house these past 36 hours. He just chuckled and said..."Oh yeah?" (He works for A T & T if you haven't guessed)

I have great....gosh, I can't think of the word. But cloth diapering is not something I think I would have been able to do. So you go girl!!!

Off to get the new glasses.

My sister is 11 years younger than I am, and my mom is very opinionated about raising babies using the tools nature gave her (how many people can say they attended a La Leche League conference when they were 12?) and with the least possible waste. So my sister was in cloth diapers in the days of safety pins and plastic pants, and I remember there sometimes being poo in places you don't normally expect to find poo. But I think over time you either develop a diapering strategy that eliminates most of the rogue poo, or you just become glassy-eyed and indifferent to the poo.

I'm glad you're sticking with it. Good luck.

Oh, dear. I'm so late to this party and you've probably moved on but...I have to defend the cloth. I've been using cloth for the whole six months of my kid's life and I don't think the poo situation is any worse than when we have to use disposables. First, find the diaper/cover combo that fits your kid. Read reviews for products and they'll tell you if they will work for skinny babies, fat babies, tall babies, etc. Also, get some cloth wipes. I use them to wrangle the mess into a tidy wad that then can be thrown wholesale into the diaper pail.

Good luck.
